A glass of wine with friends, time with the family, and a feeling of spiritual renewal and inspiration at the end of a long year: Time to relax and feel the spirit of Christmas.

Yes, this is the festival of Navidad (Christmas, in Spain, where we have a base, although our business is international and our main base is now in the UK) – a time that is bright with decorations and goodwill, a religious time with images of Papa Noel (Father Christmas) and the baby Jesus, and a time when presents are left gift-wrapped around the base of the Christmas tree.

In Spain, the Christmas season begins on the 8th of December with the feast of the Immaculate Conception. In Andalucía, it is very much a religious fiesta celebrated in front of the great Gothic cathedral in Sevilla and with a ceremony and dance called ‘los Seises’.

On Christmas Eve (in Spanish: Nochebuena) as the stars come out, tiny oil lamps are lit in every house, and after Midnight Mass and Christmas Dinner, people fill the streets: Some dance to the sound of small guitars (or more likely a music player these days).

Many homes (like the local Town Halls or Ayuntamientos and main shopping centres) have a manger or belén, as do the cathedrals and churches. These are complete with beautifully crafted scenes of Bethlehem . . the stable with its animals and handmade figures representing baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the Three Kings.

Spanish children think of the Three Kings (los Reyes Magos) as the gift bearers. Tradition has it that they arrive on January 6th, the date the Wise Men gave gifts to baby Jesus (and the start of the feast of Epiphany). Shoes are filled with straw or barley for the tired camels/horses/donkeys that must carry their riders through the night – although, nowadays, it is common for sweets / chocolates / bon bons / caramelos, etc, to be added for the children by their parents during the night so that, by morning, the food is gone and in place of the straw and barley are sweets and presents.

A gift for inspiration and caring - especially for those on a journey or starting something new

This beautiful sterling-silver Camino Finisterre necklace features an open scallop shell. (The scallop shell is symbolic of the Camino de Santiago - and travellers).

The 1,000-year-old pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is known as the Way of St. James (El Camino de Santiago - in Spanish). Every year, some 200,000 travellers journey along this Camino, by foot or by bike, from all over the world - often seeking inspiration and/or deeper spiritual understanding: Many carry a scallop shell token or keepsake . . which is why the Scallop Shell has become a symbol for travellers in general - people setting out on a journey or starting something new.
