A glass of wine with friends, time with the family, and a feeling of spiritual renewal and inspiration at the end of a long year: Time to relax and feel the spirit of Christmas.

Yes, this is the festival of Navidad (Christmas, in Spain, where we have a base, although our business is international and our main base is now in the UK) – a time that is bright with decorations and goodwill, a religious time with images of Papa Noel (Father Christmas) and the baby Jesus, and a time when presents are left gift-wrapped around the base of the Christmas tree.

In Spain, the Christmas season begins on the 8th of December with the feast of the Immaculate Conception. In Andalucía, it is very much a religious fiesta celebrated in front of the great Gothic cathedral in Sevilla and with a ceremony and dance called ‘los Seises’.

On Christmas Eve (in Spanish: Nochebuena) as the stars come out, tiny oil lamps are lit in every house, and after Midnight Mass and Christmas Dinner, people fill the streets: Some dance to the sound of small guitars (or more likely a music player these days).

Many homes (like the local Town Halls or Ayuntamientos and main shopping centres) have a manger or belén, as do the cathedrals and churches. These are complete with beautifully crafted scenes of Bethlehem . . the stable with its animals and handmade figures representing baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the Three Kings.

Spanish children think of the Three Kings (los Reyes Magos) as the gift bearers. Tradition has it that they arrive on January 6th, the date the Wise Men gave gifts to baby Jesus (and the start of the feast of Epiphany). Shoes are filled with straw or barley for the tired camels/horses/donkeys that must carry their riders through the night – although, nowadays, it is common for sweets / chocolates / bon bons / caramelos, etc, to be added for the children by their parents during the night so that, by morning, the food is gone and in place of the straw and barley are sweets and presents.

Across south east Spain there are groups dedicated to the Camino route to Santiago - travelling north along various established and marked routes. (The most famous of these 'rutas' is La Vía de Plata from Sevilla.) Another, Camino Mozárabe de Santiago, comes from Malaga and . . Almería. To the Almería group, the combination of Scallop shell of Santiago and the Indalo of Almería seen in this spoon is classic.

The 1,000-year-old pilgrimage to the shrine of St. James in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is known as the Way of St. James (El Camino de Santiago - in Spanish). Some 200,000 pilgrims travel to the city each year from all over the world to find inspiration and/or deeper spiritual understanding.

This would make a truly unique and inspirational present, a lovely, decorative gift to display in the home - especially for someone with interests in both Almería AND Santiago.

Dimensions: The spoon measures 10.5cms in length and features a beautiful Santiago scallop shell as well as an Indalo. A very symbolic gift from Spain.

Gift this unique inspirational scallop shell spoon with an Indalo to wish someone good fortune and protection in their life. You can remind them that you are thinking of them and wish them good luck, with this special “Camino” gift. Comes gift-wrapped, like all our presents - and we can add a personal message on your behalf
