The Hamsa (or Hand of Fatima) is a palm-shaped good luck amulet used in many societies and religions as a sign of protection – providing defense against the ‘evil eye’ and strengthening the vulnerable or weak. It is predominantly carried on a bracelet, as pendant on a necklace, or as earrings.

Uniquely of all symbols, it is represented in nearly all the major religions of the world (Hamsa Christian, Hamsa Islam, Hamsa Judaism) and so makes the perfect inspirational present and is believed to protect the wearer.

But why? What is the meaning of the Hamsa, what is it’s definition?

Levantine Christians call it the Hand of Mary, for the mother of Jesus. Then, following its incorporation into Jewish tradition, it was also called the Hand of Miriam for Miriam, sister of Moses.

In Islam, the Hamsa pendant – or Hand of Fatima, represents the five fundamentals of Islamic religion – faith, prayer, pilgrimage, fasting and charity. Some believe that when Hamsas are represented with the fingers together it is for good fortune or good luck, and that when the fingers of the hand are apart or spread they are more for protection (as witnessed by the fact that in some parts of the world a Hamsa with the fingers spread are hung above the door of a pregnant woman to ward off bad spirits).

In Greek or Turkish imagery, it is often combined with an eye in the hand – the blue all-seeing eye that is commonly seen on good luck charms in this part of the world as the Hamsa evil eye necklace or choker. It is also popular as a protective talisman in India and the southern Mediterranean regions. The Arab and Israeli Hamsa hand is downward-facing. It is sometimes shown with a door in the centre – the open doorway to heavenly wisdom, so that God can more easily hear someone’s prayers, and so that, for that person, all doors will be open and their path will be protected.

Overall, the Hamsa is for protection and compassion – with the hand as a healing symbol. When featuring an eye(which is more common on bracelets than on pendants / necklaces), the eye is thought to absorb positive energy and deflect negative energy or intentions.

The Hand of Fatima Hamsa symbol also represents blessings, power and strength. It is therefore a powerful and popular good luck charm and commonly seen in jewellery necklaces and bracelets in Spain.

In French the word is Khamsa . . ” La main de Fatma (ou Fatima) aussi appelée Khamsa transmet la puissance, la protection, l’offrande ou la bénédiction “.

The Hand of Fatima – whether as a Hamsa pendant, Hamsa necklace or Hamsa bracelet makes the perfect present – a really unique jewellery gift to pass on your best wishes of compassion, goodwill and protection. And . . it is very common in Spain (where we have a base) . . especially in the south of Andalucia, and so makes a perfect gift or souvenir of something from Spain.

Despite the fact that the Iberian Peninsular is predominantly Catholic, the Hamsa charm is common in Spain (particularly Hamsa jewellery such as Hamsa earrings or bracelets) probably because the Moors of North Africa occupied large parts of the Iberian Peninsular for some 800 years until most were eventually expelled by the Christians in the mid 15th Century. In consequence, many names, especially in Andalucía (itself an Arabic name al-Andalus, or Andaluz), are Arabic in origin and the Islam Hamza is evident. Indeed much of Spain – particularly the south, is deeply Moorish in history. One author has described Spain as an Arabic or Moorish canvas with latter-day España painted on top, layer by layer.

Examples of some Hand of Fatima / Hamsa jewellery gifts can be seen in our CENTRAL (Group) SHOP:

– Hamsa charm bracelet as gift to say ‘Get well soon‘

– Hand of Fatima as protection charm for a friend who is travelling

– Fatima / Hamsa present for courage and strength when someone is embarking on a new venture, new start or ‘new beginnings’

So, although not so common in western Europe, the Hamsa symbol, and Hamsa jewelry can make a meaningful present for all beliefs – gifting wishes of protection, compassion, blessings . . and luck. These gifts have a meaning for everyone in every job and walk of life whatever their profession – teacher / tutor / professor / lecturer, engineer, lawyer / judge, journalist / writer, sportsman etc, a doctor, musician (like a violinist, for example), or a student, or vet, and so on, or simply a colleague at work.

In many of the markets and jewellers of Andalucía, southern Spain, you will see the Hamsa Hand of Fatima jewellery on display – alongside other popular good luck and protection charms . . like, for example, the Indalo and, of course, many Christian symbols and crosses too.
