Mother Earth, motherhood, the Catholic Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus / God . . and the modern celebration of Mothers Day formalised as a holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. There are many traditions but only one important feature: Mum. The first celebrations of Mother’s Day go back to ancient Greece – in honour of Rhea, the mother of the gods Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. Likewise the Romans called this celebration Hilaria and it was held on March 15 in the temple of Cybele and for three days they made offerings. In England in the seventeenth century, it was called Mothering Sunday. Children attended Mass and returned home with gifts for their mothers. In addition, as many people working for wealthy households did not have the opportunity to be at home, that Sunday was given as a day off for people to visit their families.

This impressive little statuette is a stunning example of Spanish ceramic art. It is made in the northeast of Spain, famous for its Mediterranean seafronts along the Costa Brava and Costa Dorada, and of course for its culture and art. (Cataluña, or Catalonia was the birthplace of painter Salvador Dalí and Antoni Gaudi).

It is intricately finished in the Catalan modernism style . . a form of architectural art typically seen in and around Barcelona's Parc Guell. Each piece is hand-painted in dazzling colours to produce a beautiful and uniquely-crafted figurine that would make a delightful present . . and a unique gift from Spain.

Description: This Mediterranean Rooster figurine / Cockerel figurine measures approx 12cms (9.7ins) high by 9cms (3.5ins) wide by 4cms (1.6ins) deep. It would look perfect displayed in the home, especially in the kitchen. The hand-painted, porcelain-like finish is simply stunning in its detail and is an intricate piece of Spanish ceramic art.
