There are many traditions but only one important feature: Mum. The first celebrations of Mother’s Day go back to ancient Greece – in honour of Rhea, the mother of the gods Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. Likewise the Romans called this celebration Hilaria and it was held on March 15 in the temple of Cybele and for three days they made offerings. In England in the seventeenth century, it was called Mothering Sunday. Children attended Mass and returned home with gifts for their mothers. In addition, as many people working for wealthy households did not have the opportunity to be at home, that Sunday was given as a day off for people to visit their families.
